MAA – Matthew Allchurch Architects becomes Turner’s House’s first Corporate Member

Lockdown may be challenging many local charities and businesses but they are also finding new ways to work together.

Turner’s House Trust are pleased to announce that MAA have become Turner’s House’s first Annual Corporate Member in its history and would like to thank MAA for their support. Corporate Members join a committed community of organisations enjoying priority access to the museum as they support the role of Turner’s House Trust as custodians of the ‘Sandycombe Years’.

Whilst Twickenham and Teddington residents may be self-isolating in lockdown, video screens were hot with the number of ideas being exchanged about how MAA could help Turner’s House make a difference.

‘I’ve been a great admirer of JMW Turner for many years and to have the house he designed on our doorstep is fantastic. The work that the trust has completed to open Sandycoombe to the public, and on such a tight budget, is commendable.

It is a project that we wanted to support both as corporate sponsors but also giving our professional time to assist with future projects.’ said Matt Allchurch MD MAA.

House Director Ricky Pound explained “As an independent registered charity, Turner’s House receives no government funding and relies exclusively on visitors’  admission, grants, corporate sponsorship and donations to fund all House costs, education and outreach programmes as well as the programme of Turner Original Exhibitions and Artists in Residence”.

Trustee and local resident Romy Murray explained “Turner’s House enables visitors to experience the house Turner designed and lived in with his father when away from the hectic environment of London.  We provide an important resource for local primary and secondary schools and are keen to ensure that we can still welcome the 300+ children who look forward to visiting the house as well as participating in projects themed around Turner and art.  We are partnering with local mental health and elderly organisations offering this peaceful house for tailored supportive programmes.  Whilst we will have to work out how we manage this with acceptable “social distancing” we expect the need for such support to increase even more when we are able to reopen.”

Vice chair and trustee Michael Deriaz said   “Earlier this year, we welcomed the Bank of England’s Chief Cashier, Sarah John and Bank Note Designer Debbie Marriott, who came to talk about the launch of the new £20 note featuring J.M.W. Turner.  At that event, we discussed Turner as a shrewd businessman and we started to talk to businesses about the benefits in developing a partnership with Turner’s House Trust. We were delighted to have two corporate sponsors for Turner and the Thames, Five Paintings and I am thrilled to welcome MAA as our first Corporate Members.”
