Bringing Joseph William Mallord Turner back to Sandycombe

Bringing Joseph William Mallord Turner back to Sandycombe

London Luminaries is a partnership of historic properties in South West London sharing history and heritage through online talks for everyone to enjoy. We were thrilled to be part of their Spotlight Talks series this year; please enjoy learning about the plans to interpret Turner’s House.

A Spotlight Talk with London Luminaries

A major initiative for 2026 at Turner’s House is underway with the seeds started to be sown this year. Part one had been the immaculate restoration of the house but part two, is creating the look and feel of a house in which William Turner is once again ‘present’.

Is atmosphere more important than accuracy? What are the threads that can be pulled together to create the feeling that he has just popped out to do a bit of fishing on the Thames and will be back shortly? How can objects be used to do this and what other means are available to enrich the visitor experience? What were the house museums that inspired us and how do you give a building and a brand a personality?

In this talk Lucy Littlewood, the Chair of Turner’s House Trust, explains the journey upon which we have embarked and how we are bringing Turner back to Sandycombe Lodge.

150th Birthday Celebrations of St Margarets Station

On 3 October 2026, Turner’s House joined the celebrations marking the 150th birthday of St Margarets Station, with the unveiling of a new mural on Platform 3. The mural is part of a Southeast Communities Rail Partnership project, created in collaboration with Turner’s House and the Friends of St Margarets Station. Artist Will Parker brought together drawings by local children and ideas from the community to create a colourful and whimsical map celebrating the local area. Children from three local schools: St Stephen’s, Orleans Primary and St Mary’s, contributed their creativity and ideas to the project. We were delighted to be part of this wonderful community celebration and to see local stories and young imaginations brought together in a permanent artwork for St Margarets Station.
